ThoughtFarmer is looking for a Director of Software Development to lead the team responsible for building, shipping, and operating our software products. You’ll be the driving force behind our technology strategy, ensuring we deliver exceptional value to our customers.

Drive strategic growth and alignment

  • As part of the leadership team, you will provide strategic direction for the software development lifecycle, aligning with business objectives and goals.
  • Represent engineering in senior stakeholder discussions, communicating technical concepts effectively.
  • Optimize budgets and resources for maximum efficiency.
  • Monitor and track key performance indicators for the engineering organization.

Build transformative software solutions

  • Collaborate with product, design, sales, marketing, and customer success teams for seamless integration and delivery.
  • Oversee the development process from requirements gathering to maintenance.
  • Manage and mitigate risks throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Lead Quality Assurance with a focus on automation and early issue detection.

Foster a culture of innovation and technical excellence

  • Define and implement software development strategy, roadmap, and architecture ensuring scalability and security.
  • Champion innovation and evaluate emerging technologies.
  • Implement Agile methodologies and DevOps practices.

Lead and inspire a high-performing engineering team

  • Attract, recruit, and retain top engineering talent. Support career development through coaching and feedback.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement in development efficiency and quality.

Must-have requirements

  • 10+ years of software development experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven ability to build and lead high-performing teams.
  • Proven ability to attract and retain top engineering talent.
  • Exceptional communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
  • Experience managing budgets and resources effectively.
  • Solid understanding of software development methodologies and best practices—including Agile methodologies and DevOps principles.
  • Experience designing and implementing systems that provide long term strategic business value
  • Post-secondary degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent experience.

Bonus points (optional)

  • Experience with Enterprise/B2B SaaS applications using C#/.NET and AWS cloud technologies.
  • Experience building and scaling software development organizations.
  • Active participation in open-source projects or technical communities.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills.

We’re a hybrid workplace

ThoughtFarmer embraces a hybrid work model, allowing our team members to balance the flexibility of working from home with the benefits of in-person collaboration. For this Director-level role, we require one day per month of in-office work, making it ideal for candidates based in the Metro Vancouver area.

All staff—remote or local—enjoy a quarterly home office allowance that they can use to buy whatever they need to be productive outside the office.
